I’m still alive, people. Don’t worry. Things have been busy on my end — and I’ve been lazy. Shame on me! Anyway, here are some photos of Salt Lake City-based bluegrass outfit Maybelle’s Music Box performing at my favorite coffee shop in Cedar City, The Grind Coffee House. They’re also available on my Flickr profile. More photos from Cedar City concerts will be available
in the coming days.

Southern Utah: Open Mic Night at The Grind

September 11, 2008 by Matthew Montgomery

Steven Swift, Cedar City musician, performs during Open Mic Night at The Grind Coffee House. For eight years, Open Mic Night has taken place at Groovacious, a Cedar City record store; one week ago, Open Mic Night was moved to The Grind Coffee House. The new ownership at the coffee shop has already shown a great willingness to support music in Cedar City, which is a breath of fresh air.

Open Mic Night takes place at The Grind Coffee House and starts at 8 p.m.. Those interested in performing should arrive at 7:30 p.m. such that scheduling can take place effectively with the newly revised night. Entry is free, but visitors are encouraged to purchase product from the coffee house —I opt for the coffee. Go figure.

The Moroccan Mint green tea is nice, too — both iced and hot. Using a good blend is essential, and I’ve never really been served a bad cup at The Grind, though do be sure to ask for another cup to place your tea bag in, or just be sure to throw it away. Leaving the leaves steeping in the water for too long can leave you with a bitter taste.

Photos from Open Mic Night for yesterday, Sept. 10, after the jump.

Salt Lake City-based “groove rock” group The Gorgeous Hussies performed in the Living Room at Southern Utah University today, appearing in promotion of their concert tonight at The Grind Coffee House. Tickets are $5 to see the group, or $8 to see both the group and the Off the Cuff performance that follows. Photos, obviously, are below. Someday, they might go into the gallery… once I get it working again. Thanks for your patience, MusicGeeks!

Jordan Olsen, guitarist and vocalist, and John Chatelain, bassist, keyboardist, and vocalist, for the Gorgeous Hussies, performed in the Living Room at SUU. Ryan Smith, drummer for the group, was replaced by a drum machine; the final photo in this series sees Ryan’s discontent at being phased out for a robot. In reality, it was only done to prevent excessive noise on the university campus. Ryan will be performing at The Grind with the band.

The Gorgeous HussiesThe Gorgeous Hussies, a fun-filled Salt Lake City-based power pop band with more than a modicum of jazz and funk influence, will be performing in both St. George and Cedar City, Utah. Their live performances are a thing to behold, with performances sometimes including a fusion-esque performance of “Wanna Be,” the hit from England-based recording group The Spice Girls.

The band will be performing at the St. George Street Fair on Thursday, Oct. 23, at The Grind Coffee House in Cedar City on Friday, Aug.  29, and at the Brian Head Resort on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Check out The Gorgeous Hussies on their MySpace, or listen below to a new track from the group, “Pop Chanteuse” and an older track, “Dangerously Similar”. The band has also been the subject of a MusicGeek.org spotlight and an interview on this lovely site.

Wine and Alchemy: World comes to Flag

August 24, 2008 by Jared Montgomery

wine-and-alchemyToday I walked into Bookmans (a local used book store and internet cafe) today, which is a pretty regular occurrence, and I was greeted by something a little irregular. A world band called Wine and Alchemy had invaded dressed as Gypsies. As the acoustic guitar and accordion harmonized, their vocalist and belly dancer flitted around the cafe. They played a variety of  Greek, Armenian, “Gypsy”, Flamenco, and Middle Eastern styles while here, and they did it really quite well. They hail from San Antonio, and brought some delightful gypsy fun to the mountains of Flagstaff.  You can find some tracks to listen to at wineandalchemy.com. I would highly recommend them to anyone that appreciates world folk music.

Spotlight: Mokshya

mokshya_promoMökshya (Pronounced Moke-she-ah) is, simply put, a metal band. Hailing from Flagstaff, Arizona, they combine a message of acceptance and love with anger and disdain toward the core of this countries beliefs and systems. When I put their promo cd into my computer to listen to for the first time, I had no idea what I was in for. After hearing the first 10 seconds, I was forced crank my stereo up. I was absolutely delighted with what I got. Mökshya is not one of your run of the mill garage metal bands. These guys show real promise and real talent. They write intelligently, it’s not all guitar solos, and it’s not all thrashy, thrown together chords. All in all, I couldn’t be more pleased with Mökshya. I can only hope that I hear more music from here in Flag that shows as much promise as these talented musicians do. You can find more tracks by Mökshya on iTunes, where they have released their debut album, “?We the People!” They punch you in the face with their tunes and leave you begging for more.

Oh, faithful readers, whoever you may be: It is with some pleasure I can now reveal our “grand plans.” The launch of Regional MusicGeek.org is here; our first region is Flagstaff, Arizona, where my brother — a writer here — has moved and is the head of the effort in the city. In the future, we will bring more regional coverage.

As always, if you’re interested in writing for MusicGeek.org, don’t be shy.

In the new features department, maybe you’ve noticed that we’re more colorful now. Thoughts? Leave a comment!
