The Cat From Hue, indie/psych-folk quintet from Camano Island, Washington, are an interesting listen. Clearly influenced by other indie bands from the northwest, Modest Mouse and Portugal. The Man, this young group uniquely portrays the Puget Sound in their lyrics alongside upbeat, folksy instrumentals. In “Welcome Back The Rain,” through well constructed folk guitar, slow drum beats, tambourine, and high keys, their music emulates the sound and feeling of a typical rainy day in the Puget Sound. Their lyrics in this song are delivered strong and sleepy, with the verse declaring “We watch the days run down to the hour change/We watch the green leaves turn around, and walk through the sleet and the rain…” and more cleverly sour lyrics regarding the Seattle music scene: “I hear the Puget Sound is Land of the Green/I reciprocate the meaning with the speech about the scene […] just a crow in my crow’s nest/tippin’ back my Seattle’s Best Coffee.”

Spotlight: Papercuts http://www.musicgeek.org/wp/2008/01/25/spotlight-papercuts http://www.musicgeek.org/wp/2008/01/25/spotlight-papercuts#respond Fri, 25 Jan 2008 13:00:02 +0000 http://www.musicgeek.org/wp/2008/01/25/spotlight-papercuts PapercutsPapercuts, fronted by Jason Robert Quever, bring us two unique and refreshing pop/folk rock albums: his debut Mockingbird (2004), and latest release Can’t Go Back (2007). In both albums, Quever takes on airy vocals that blend beautifully with his folk-style guitar work interlaced with string instruments, gentle percussion, and cheery pop tunes. His timeless style, most apparent in “Take the 227th Exit” and “Outside Looking In,” will very likely keep him in the spotlight for many years to come. Papercuts will also be going on tour this year beginning February 28th through April. Further information on tour dates may be found on gnomonsong.com.

Blue Merle – Burning in the Sun http://www.musicgeek.org/wp/2005/09/06/blue-merle-burning-in-the-sun http://www.musicgeek.org/wp/2005/09/06/blue-merle-burning-in-the-sun#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2005 05:25:06 +0000 http://www.musicgeek.org/wp/2005/09/06/blue-merle-burning-in-the-sun The first time I heard Nashville’s Blue Merle, I could have sworn it was a side project of Coldplay’s Chris Martin based on the singer’s voice. Although the singer may sound alot like Martin, the music itself goes in several different directions with an occasional fiddle or violin thrown in.

Two of the first few tracks, “Burning in the Sun” and “Lucky to Know You” were great folk-rockers with swirling violins and fiddles here and there, giving them each a bluegrass or country-rock feel. Other great songs were the powerful Keane-ish ballad, “If I Could,” and the exciting, thumping John Mayer-ish jingle “Boxcar Racer.” The last half of the album was filled with hip violin-flavored ballads in the style of Neil Young or Counting Crows, and the two upbeat bluegrass-folkies “Seeing Through You” and “Either Way it Goes.” But by far the best tracks were the ones that sounded the most like Coldplay musically, which were the melodramatic “Stay” and the somber, piano-leading “Every Ship Must Sail Away.” I found myself playing this sad yet brilliant song again and again for its beautiful ending. Much like Coldplay or any modern-day singer-songwriter, Blue Merle is one of those bands to listen for a good, relaxing, peaceful state of mind, and “Burning in the Sun” ranks up there for me as one of those reflective mood-setting albums to listen to all the way through for a rainy day.
