News: Broken Bells, incoming indie rock darling the result of James Mercer, Danger Mouse collaboration
James Mercer, lead man for The Shins, and Danger Mouse have put together a soothing and funky collaboration: Broken Bells. “The High Road” is a tantalizing peek of what will likely be one of the better albums we see this year. The single, the first from the upcoming self-titled album, is the current iTunes Single of the Week.
Snippets of the entire album are available on the iTunes, along with the entire first track, “The High Road.” At this time, we can only speculate the possibility of a tour; if tour dates are set, we will promptly update that information here. For more on Broken Bells, visit brokenbells.com.
As a side note, James Mercer will also be appearing in filmmaker Matt McCormick’s film, Some Days are Better Than Others. The film will be screening at South by Southwest Film Festival, which will take place from March 12–20 in Austin, Texas. More information may be found at somedaysthemovie.com as well as sxsw.com/film. Specific screening dates have not yet been announced.
News: Broken Social Scene preps new release, tour
At last! A new Broken Social Scene release — and not from the Presents series — has been handed a release date: May 4. According to a press release, the Canadian supergroup has slimmed to six core members for the forthcoming effort, which is being produced by post-rock veteran John McEntire, perhaps most recognizable for his work in Tortoise. Just before the album hits shelves, BSS will be jumping on tour, starting in the states before jetting across the pond to Europe.

Music Geek #10: Broken Social Scene in Salt Lake City
Let’s get one thing straight. I love Broken Social Scene with a passion I reserve mostly for things other than music — you know, food, water, the like — and a chance to see them perform a mere four(!) hours away, in Salt Lake City, Utah was something I didn’t care to pass up. After learning of the concert via an IRC friend (I call this Music Geek for a reason, after all) I set out to find a way, rain or shine, money or, well, broke.

“Fashionable People,” named for the falsetto-inflected chorus line from this song, a track from 2007’s Ashtray Rock, is an entertaining romp in power pop that experiments with a variety of instrumentation styles to reach its easily listenable destination. Top it off with an entertaining video (embedded after the jump,) and you’ve got a song that sounds almost Weezerish (if I can coin a term, like all good music journalists) in its methods; however, there’s an unrestrained feel here that would place it above most recent efforts from the band Joel Plaskett undoubtedly drew some influence from.
Video: Noah and the Whale – “5 Years Time”
Noah and the Whale, a nice little indie pop group from London, are releasing their latest, Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, on Cherry Tree Records on September 16th; to promote it, they’ve released a video for “5 Years Time,” which I’ve embedded below. The track’s cute, happy, the works — in it’s own way, it fields a certain twee feel. I’m not complaining. Watch the video after the jump, or watch it on imeem.
Sub Pop hits 20, shares anniversary with Microsoft’s Zune
So, Sub Pop, the infamous record label from Seattle, has hit 20 years old; to celebrate, they’ve released a number of exclusive items to the Zune Marketplace. Now, I don’t necessarily endorse the Zune (nor do I necessarily endorse the iPod,) but the content’s worth checking out if you’ve already got one of those neat devices. Plus, you can get $2 off each album from Sub Pop (for a limited time, of course) — so if you’ve been waiting to grab the latest from The Jesus and Mary Chain, wait no longer.
